Loudon, N.H. — Kenny Irwin Jr., 30, of Charlotte, N.C. and formerly of Indianapolis, died Friday in Concord Hospital. He was born Aug. 5, 1969. He was unmarried.
He was the Winston Cup series' rookie of the year in 1998, and in 1999 he collected two poles and finished a career-best third in the Daytona 500. His 1999 season included two top-five and six top-10 finishes. In 1997, his only full season with the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, Irwin was named Rookie of the Year. He had two wins at Metro Dade-Homestead Motorsports Complex and Texas Motor Speedway. In 1996, he sat on the pole in only his second NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start at Richmond International Raceway. Irwin also had seven wins in USAC's Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series, and was named its Rookie of the Year in 1993. He was USAC Silver Crown Series Rookie of the Year in 1994 he had four career Silver Crown Series victories.
