JON WOOD PRACTICES NO. 21 MOTORCRAFT TAURUS
9/2/2005
Fontana, Calif. — For the first time since 1964, a man with the last name of Wood is behind the wheel of the famed No. 21 Ford. Jon Wood filled in for Ricky Rudd during Friday's practice session at California Speedway in preparation for Sunday's Sony HD 500.
Rudd was not at the track after attending the funeral of his father, Al Rudd Sr. earlier on Friday in Virginia. Al Rudd, Sr. died on Tuesday after a lengthy illness. Many teams, including all five Roush Racing Fords, are sporting decals on their cars in memory of Rudd Sr.
Glen Wood, founder of the family-owned team, drove from 1953-64 and won four times. He competed twice in 1964, capturing one pole and one third-place finish. He earned a grand total of $530.
Rudd's status for the remainder of the weekend is still to be determined.
