Fort Worth, Texas — Long-time NASCAR crew chief Doug Richert, who recently left Red Bull Racing, was in the garage Friday at Texas Motor Speedway and plans to be at the remaining three races of the season until he finds a new job. Richert flew from North Carolina to Texas on Jack Roush's airplane. Richert, of course, formerly worked as a crew chief for Roush Fenway Racing.
Expect an announcement from Hall of Fame Racing in the next seven to 10 days that it is switching to Toyota for 2008, sources said. HOF is a satellite outfit to Joe Gibbs Racing, which already has confirmed that it will move next year. The team will add a second full-time Spring Cup car in 2009 for 19-year-old phenom Brad Coleman. J.J. Yeley will drive for HOF next season, with Coleman doing as many as seven Cup races in 2008.
The news that the ARCA RE/MAX Series will race next season at Rockingham Speedway next year is good news in the Nextel Cup garage. The Nextel Cup teams have found a ready market for their used "cars of today," in the ARCA series. NASCAR teams have been able to at least partially offset the cost of the Car of Tomorrow by selling their old-style cars to the ARCA competitors. Rockingham will host the Carolina 500 ARCA race on May 4, 2008.
Car owner Roger Penske may transfer Kurt Busch's car owner points to Sam Hornish, Jr., who is expected to drive a third Penske Racing entry in 2008. That way, Hornish would be guaranteed to make the first fives races of the season, while Busch would have a past champion's provisional to fall back on.
