Miami — Mexican native Michel Jourdain Jr., NASCAR Busch Series' first full-time Hispanic driver, will join Masters Champion Phil Mickelson and 40 of the PGA's top stars in 10 hot laps around a 1.5-mile oval track competing with NASCAR's best at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
The golfers will compete on the track for fun. Later in the week, they'll compete on the infamous Blue Monster at Doral for a $900,000 purse and a 2006 Ford GT supercar, the most exclusive prize in professional golf.
This event is a prelude to Jourdain's eagerly anticipated return to Mexico City on Sunday for the Telcel Motorola Mexico 200 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez road course—the first NASCAR Busch Series points event held outside the United States.
In contrast to the upcoming intense competition, this week's relaxed setting at the Ford Championship Racing Adventure, gives Jourdain the opportunity to accompany Columbian golfer Camilo Villegas and other PGA pros in three distinct driving events. NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series standouts Dale Jarrett, Matt Kenseth, Mark Martin, and Elliott Sadler headline the field. NHRA drag racer Ashley Force and Grand American road-racing expert Scott Maxwell will also join them.
"I'm looking forward to the racing adventure," said Jourdain. "It will be a great opportunity to meet golfers like Phil Mickelson and Camilo Villegas. Plus, I can spend some time with some legendary drivers like Mark Martin and Dale Jarrett. I will learn a little bit more about golf and a lot more about NASCAR racing all in one day."
Jourdain is fresh off a strong 25th place finish in his first race, the Hershey's Take 5 300 at the Daytona International Speedway where he received praise from Mexican-American fans and the congratulations of NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Jourdain comes to NASCAR racing after spending the 2004 season with RuSport in the Champ Car series. The son of well-known Mexican race driver Michel Jourdain Sr., Jourdain became the youngest Champ Car driver at age 19 in 1996 and was the series' "Most Improved Driver" in 1997. In 152 career Champ Car starts, Jourdain scored two wins, 25 top-10s, and 20 top-five finishes, including nine podiums.
"Bringing NASCAR and Ford Racing to the famous Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is a great way to grow stock car racing's Mexican fan base," added Jourdain. "It's going to be one of the biggest races of the year, and I am glad to be part of this historic event."
Jourdain and the other drivers will provide instruction and drive hot laps with the golfers in specially equipped, two-place race cars. The highlight of the golfer's day is a 10-lap stint at the wheel of a race-ready NASCAR Ford Taurus on the speedway's banked 1.5-mile oval. They'll also get the chance to maneuver the 550-horsepower 2005 Ford GT supercar and the all-new Ford Racing Grand Am Cup Mustang on the speedway's modified road course and drag race a 300-horsepower 2005 Mustang GT on a 1/8-mile straightaway.
A 2006 Ford GT supercar is the centerpiece and the key element of the winner's $900,000 prize package at the Ford Championship at Doral. The Ford GT is a limited-edition car in very high demand. In fact, new Ford GT's have been auctioned for charity for as much as $550,000. With a suggested retail price of more than $140,000, the Ford GT is the most expensive and most exclusive prize in the history of pro golf.
This year, 10 of the top 11 money winners on the PGA tour, including Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods are expected to play in the Ford Championship at Doral.
